Abstract

In this article Manuel Almendro introduces the reader to his latest book "The Labyrinth of Aya-huasca" published in Spanish language by Kairos editorial. In this work, he gathers almost forty years of coexistence and research with healers and shamans of the Peruvian Amazon jungle and the Mexican Sierra Mazateca. The article defines the book’s sections and the topics addressed therein, such as indigenous worldviews, the historical contexts of shamanism, the research under-way on traditional indigenous medicines as well as their psychotherapeutic potential in the treat-ment of mental and corporal pathologies. All this without missing a critical perspective on the mi-suse and abuse associated with works using the so-called “sacred plants” and the altered states of consciousness to which they lead.

Resumen

En este artículo Manuel Almendro introduce al lector al interior de su último libro “El laberinto de la Ayahuasca” publicado por editorial Kairós, donde recoge casi cuarenta años de convivencia e investigación con curanderos, sanadores y chamanes de la selva amazónica peruana y la sierra ma-zateca mexicana. Define las partes que estructuran el libro, y los temas que se tratan en cada una de ellas, como por ejemplo las cosmovisiones indígenas, los contextos históricos del chamanismo, las investigaciones que se están llevando a cabo sobre las medicinas tradicionales indígenas así como su potencial psicoterapéutico en el tratamiento de patologías mentales y corporales. Todo ello sin faltar una visión crítica sobre el mal uso y abuso que se está dando al trabajo con las lla-madas “plantas sagradas” y los estados alterados de consciencia a las que conducen.
