Abstract

Introduction: Little attention is given to how individuals process sensory information during a transpersonal experience.  What selective attention processes operate during a transpersonal event is significant to better understand cognitive operations and for selection of target objects in research studies. Methodology: Forty case descriptions of observations by subjects during out-of-body experiences (OBEs) during near-death experiences (NDEs) and those separate from NDEs, occurring in hospitalized patients, were selected for content analysis.  Results: Four stimuli attracted the attention of subjects: seeing out of place or odd objects or events (20%), looking at their injured body (30%), watching people coming to the accident or resuscitations in the hospital (35%), and spiritual body assessment (30%).  Conclusion: Normally selective attention occurs within a voluntary, goal directed system and an involuntary stimulus driven system.  Only one goal directed activity, required in studies, was noted. All others were involuntary stimulus driven selective attention occurrences.
