Abstract

Introduction: There is scientific evidence that suffering from anxiety is associated with high levels of stress. Psychology studies include different therapies that may be useful to alleviate or eliminate symptoms of anxiety (nervousness, stress, restlessness, insecurity, fear, irritability, distorted thinking, etc.). Objective: The objective of this review is to investigate the efficacy of two therapies; meditation (seek tranquility of mind through techniques that seek to reduce the flow of thoughts) and mindfulness (state of  consciousness that implies attending the experience of the present), in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Conclusion: The studies included in this review seem to indicate that both, meditation and mindfulness can be effective in reducing anxiety, although the results still have some methodological shortcomings, which is why it is not yet possible to reach a firm conclusion about the effectiveness of meditation and mindfulness in people suffering from an anxiety disorder. Further research is needed on this issue to clarify the potential effectiveness of such therapies (meditation and mindfulness) for this treatment.
