Abstract

This article reviews the evidence on the effects of ayahuasca on pregnant mothers and during the lactation period. The inaccuracy of the information offered by informative materials on this subs-tance is pointed out, considering the substance as harmful as other drugs. These materials do not reflect what studies from various scientific paradigms have shown: its many emotional, social and spiritual benefits. The alarmist messages sound more like a politically correct attitude than the existing evidence. The author reviews the studies where it is indicated with scientific methodology that ayahuasca does not present toxicity if it is used properly. Assessments from ethnographic sources are also presented, which indicates that an adequate use of this substance is beneficial for pregnant women and babies. Related to the toxicity in babies, the author points out that in the sci-entific review of the pharmacological and biological field there is no published work that indicates the influence of ayahuasca on breast milk.

Resumen

Este artículo revisa las evidencias sobre los efectos de la ayahuasca en madres gestantes y durante el período de lactancia. Se señala la inexactitud de la información que ofrecen los materiales di-vulgativos sobre esta sustancia, considerándola tan dañina como las llamadas drogas de abuso. Es-tos materiales no reflejan lo que los estudios desde diversos paradigmas científicos han demostra-do: sus numerosos beneficios emocionales, sociales y espirituales. Los mensajes alarmistas suenan más a una actitud políticamente correcta que a las evidencias existentes. Se revisa en este trabajo los estudios donde se señala con metodología científica que la ayahuasca no presenta toxicidad si se realiza un uso adecuado. Se presentan también valoraciones desde fuentes etnográficas, las cua-les también señalan que el consumo adecuado de esta sustancia es beneficioso para gestantes y bebés. Respecto a la toxicidad en bebés, el autor señala que en la revisión científica de ámbito farmacológico y biológico no existe ningún trabajo publicado que señale la influencia de la ayahu-asca en la leche materna.
